New North Carolina Data Posted
We finished processing the North Carolina ESI data and have now posted it for download [visit our new Downloads page—More about that below]. In addition to the always popular PDF version, data are also available in multiple GIS formats, including a personal geodatabase and map document (.mxd) for use in Esri’s ArcGIS 10.0; Esri shapefiles with an ArcView 3.x project; and the free ESI Viewer software that enables those without proprietary GIS software to view, query, and print the ESI data. All of these formats provide the data using the standardized ESI symbolization, and links to all of the associated data tables have been established. Arc Export (.e00) coverage and data table files are also available. Later this year, a DVD with these new data, as well as the existing South Carolina data, will be produced and available through our Order page.
New Data Download Site
Downloading ESI data is easier than ever now that they are posted on the NOAA OR&R Web site. Visit our Downloads page where links, sorted by state and waterway, allow you to download any of the available ESI data in the format(s) of your choice. This new site replaces the NOS Data Explorer site as the primary ESI data repository. Hosting the data locally will help insure that the most current data are always available. For example, in the past several months, standardization and updates have been made to all of the previously distributed ArcMap documents (.mxds) and geodatabase files, and these are available from this site.
Historical Data Now Available
Historical ESI data are also now accessible. All of the original ESI atlases were scanned as part of a project supported by the Climate Database Modernization Program (CDMP) [leaves OR&R site], and the PDF files generated are posted on the download page. Posting of any older digital versions of the ESI data is also underway and should be completed by the end of this calendar year.
