Cards Found on Kauai/Niihau

As of February 22, 2005, 35 drift cards have been found on the island of Kauai! The cards were found at the coastal locations shown with red dots on the map below. In some cases, more than one card was found at a particular location. In those cases, the number of cards found is shown next to the dot.

Card Details: Three drift cards were found at this location on the east coast of Kauai. One card, released as part of Release 022 on Sept. 22, 2004, was found on the beach at the Wailua Golf Course on Sept. 28, 2004. The card was in great shape, with nothing on it except sand. Two cards, released as part of Release 024 on Nov. 17, 2004, were found between Waillua and Lihue on Dec. 2, 2004.Card Details: A drift card, released as part of Release 014 on Jan. 20, 2004, was found at the Nawiliwili Harbor outer breakwater on Apr. 14, 2004. No wildlife was growing on the card, but it was fairly beaten up, as if it had spent some time being banged on the rocks. The corners were slightly rounded, and the lettering was difficult to read.Card Details: A drift card, released as part of Kona Wind Release K2 on Nov. 26, 2003, was found one-half mile north of Shipwreck Beach, near Poipu Point., on Mar. 19, 2004. The card had paint worn away in about 9 spots. In 4 of those spots, the wear was enough to go down a few layers of the wood. All of the corners were worn rounded and almost smooth. There were numerous scratches. No barnacles were found on it -- it was dry and 'jammed' in shore rocks.Card Details: A drift card, released as part of Release 013 on Dec. 17, 2003, was found at Salt Pond beach park, on the west coast of Kauai, on Mar. 27, 2004. The card was in perfect condition, with nothing attached.Card Details: Three drift cards were found at Ahukini, Hanamaulu Bay, on the east coast of Kauai. One card, released as part of Release 014 on Jan. 20, 2004, was found on Feb. 22, 2004. The card was slightly worn, and had one crack through it (perhaps from the mail delivery system). A second card, also from Release 014 on Jan. 20, 2004, was found at the Ahukini Jetty at Hanamaulu Bay on Feb. 23, 2004. The third card, from Release 024 on Nov. 17, 2004, was found at Ahukini on Dec. 3, 2004.Card Details: Three drift cards were found at this location on the east coast of Kauai. One card, released as part of Release 014 on Jan. 20, 2004, was found at Lihue Airport, about 1/4 mile north of Nawiliwili Lighthouse, on Feb. 7, 2004. A second card, released as part of Release 013 on Dec. 17, 2003, was found fronting the Lihue Airport between Nawiliwili and Ahukini on Apr. 3, 2004. This card was found in very poor condition. A third card, from Release 024 on Nov. 17, 2004, was found at Marble Beach, adjacent to a runway at Lihue Airport. Most of the writing on the card had been washed off.Card Details: A drift card, released as part of Release K2 on Nov. 26, 2003, was found directly off the housing beach in Barking Sands at the Pacific Missile Range Facility on Feb. 17, 2004. The card is in good condition. There is evidence that barnacles were attached to the card, but they are not attached now.Card Details: Four drift cards were found at this location on the east coast of Kauai. One card, released as part of Release 013 on Dec. 7, 2003, was found on Wailua Beach, next to the Radisson Kauai Resort on the east coast of Kauai on Feb. 2, 2004. There were tiny holes in the card. It was found with lots of other rubbish. A second card, part of Release 014 on Jan. 20, 2004, was found 1/2 mile north of the Kauai Beach Villas Resort on Feb. 10, 2004. The card was in excellent condition. Some very tiny barnacles were attached to top and botton edges. A third card, also part of Release 014, was found on the beach in front of the Pahio at Kauai Beach Villas, 4330 Kauai Beach Drive, Lihue, Kauai 96766. Nothing was attached to the card. A fourth card, also from Release 014, was found at Nukuli'i Beach on Apr. 4, 2004. The card was clean.Card Details: A drift card, released as part of Release 014 on Jan. 20, 2004, was found 1/4 mile offshore of Sheraton Poipu, on the southern shore of Kauai, on Feb. 3, 2004. The card was in good shape. Small barnacles were forming.Card Details: A drift card, released as part of Release 014 on Jan. 20, 2004, was found on the shore about 3 miles south or east of Majors Bay on PMRF (the surf spot called 'Targets') on the western shore of Kauai, on Feb. 8, 2004. The card appeared clean.Card Details: Two drift cards were found at this location. One card, released as part of Release 005 on Apr. 17, 2003, was found on Nov. 21 in front of the Pono Kai Resort, Kapaa, just north of the mouth of the Waikaea canal on the east coast of Kauai. The card was found in the debris line left by the huge east swell, and was in good condition. A second card, released as part of Release 012 on Nov. 14, 2003, was found at Kapaa, on the east coast of Kauai, on Mar. 10, 2004.Card Details: Two drift cards, released as part of Release 005 on Apr. 17, 2003, were found at this location. One card was found on the shore at Maha'ulepu Beach by Pao'o Pt., on the southeastern shore of Kauai, on Apr. 24, 2003. There were a few small barnacles attached to the edges of the card. A second card was found on the sand about a mile east of Mahaulepu Beach, on May 8, 2003. It is a remote location with no public access.Card Details: Five drift cards were found at this location on the southeast coast of Kauai. One card, released as part of Release 005 on Apr. 17, 2003, was found on the shore at Kipu Kai, east of Mahalepu, on May 12, 2003. It was in 'like new' condition, without any attachments. A second card, part of Release 014 on Jan. 20, 2004, was found on Kipu Beach (nicknamed 'Long Beach') on Feb. 5, 2004. The card was found on the southwestern side of the beach where most rubbish washes up. It was found on the rocks in remarkably good condition, with just a little orange paint worn off the edges and nothing growing on it. A third card, from Release 014, was found between Gillen's Beach and Rice Ranch in the Mahale'apu area, also on Feb. 5, 2004. The fourth and fifth cards, also from Release 014, were found on Kipu Kai beach on Feb. 16, 2004. They were found about 20 ft from each other. One of the cards was on the rocks and was kind of beaten up. The other card was near a dried-up river mouth. The finder reported that there was a big southeast swell and the entire beach was filled with debris. The sixth card, from Release 013 on Dec. 17, 2003, was found at Kipu Kai beach on Feb. 15, 2004. It was in good condition, with many bryozoans attached to the back side of the card.Card Details: Two drift cards were found at this location. One card, released as part of Release 005 on Apr. 17, 2003, was found on Apr. 24, on Kuna/Donkey Beach on the east coast of Kauai. The card was in good condition, but had one crack through it (perhaps from the mail delivery system). A second card, released as part of Release 004 on March 5, 2003, was found on May 8, about 2 miles south of Anahola.Card Details: A drift card, released as part of Release 005 on Apr. 17, 2003, was found on Apr. 24 on the beach at Aloha Beach Resort, just south of Opaekaa Stream, on the east coast of Kauai.Card Details: Two drift cards, released as part of 
Release 005 on Apr. 17, 2003, were found on Wailua Beach, on the eastern shore of Kauai. One card was found on Apr. 25, approximately 50 yards north of the mouth of the Wailua River. The card looked to be in perfect condition. Nothing was attached to it. A second card was found on the beach at Lydgate Park on June 15, 2003. This clean card was found under aproximately 6 inches of sand, about 20 feet from the low tide shore.
